The Evolving Role of the HR Business Partner Working Group | Hosted by Shell | Houston, TX (*WAIT LIST STARTED*)

The session is free of charge to CAHRS partner firms, but participation is limited to no more 25 attendees per session. The working group will run from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM with a continental breakfast and working lunch.

Note: This session is a continuation of a three-year series of CAHRS Working Groups focused on the evolving needs of HR Business Partners. However, participants need not have attended prior sessions. In addition, if you have attended a past WG focused on this topic, new discussion areas will be covered during this session.

Focus of Discussion: HR generalists who lead HR for large divisions face unique challenges associated with the role. The role of the “Senior/Executive HR Business Partner” is evolving rapidly, making the need for such HR leaders to find new and innovative ways to solve their challenges more important than ever. A key focus for the session will be how the role can best be leveraged to build skills needed for the present as well as those required to assume even larger responsibilities in the future.

Some of the themes we will plan to discuss include: 

  • How are companies defining the competency difference between “HR Generalist” and “HR Business Partner?”
  • How is technology changing the way HRBP’s are approaching the creation of BU-level strategies?
  • How are changes in the external environment (economic, legislative, and regulatory) impacting the way organizations think through the alignment of corporate and BU-level human capital programs?
  • What skills are the most important for HRBPs to have today? Tomorrow?
  • What key development opportunities do HRBPs require?  How are organizations developing the next generation of executive-level HRBPs?
  • How should HRBPs best approach potentially “career limiting” situations? (e.g., getting caught between two powerful senior leaders, etc.)
  • What are some “tricks and tools” that HBRPs use to manage the demands of customers located in multiple time zones?
  • How do organizations ensure best practices are shared, deployed and leveraged while recognizing the need for specific client group customization?
  • What are some best practices for leveraging the HR Service Centers, Centers of Excellence, individual experts, etc?
  • Are organizational models emerging models that are different than the traditional HRBP, Service Center and COE framework?
In preparation for the meeting, please spend some time reflecting on your own personal experiences in the above areas. Also, if you have any success stories or examples in action at your organization, please plan to share them with the rest of the participants. During the meeting, we’ll spend time talking about many of the above areas as well as others that are identified through the course of our conversations together.
